How to Get Comfortable with a PlayStation 5 Controller for Mobile and PC Gamers

Hi Playmates! As a PC and mobile gamer, playing on console took some getting used to for me. My hands were very comfortable with a mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen. Put a controller in them, though, and suddenly we needed introductions!

But console gaming definitely has its merits, and I've been getting into the action myself recently with Final Fantasy XVI. So get ready for some finger-hurting action, like I did! My fingers certainly had opinions. Take breaks when yours start complaining; the next battle can wait.

The DualSense takes some getting used to, but you do not need to master every button in your first session. Let's get connected, find a comfortable grip, and give those thumbs a chance to learn the neighborhood.

Start with the controller—and the device you actually use

Already have a DualSense? Great! Start with that. If you are shopping for one, the standard Sony DualSense is the controller this guide covers; the DualSense Edge has additional controls and settings. See the standard white Sony DualSense on Amazon

Check that your game supports controllers on your particular device. A Bluetooth connection does not automatically give a touchscreen-only game controller support.

  • PC: Check the game's controller support information. A USB data-and-charging cable is a useful wired option; match its computer-end connector to your ports. A charging-only cable will not do the same job. The Anker option below has a USB-A connector for your computer and a USB-C connector for the controller, with data transfer support. See Anker USB-A to USB-C data cables on Amazon (6 ft, two-pack)
  • Mobile: Confirm device and game compatibility first. A sturdy adjustable stand can keep the screen in view while both hands are occupied. Check that it fits your phone or tablet with its case on. The Lamicall stand below has an 18 mm hook opening, so bulky cases deserve a quick measurement. See the adjustable Lamicall phone and tablet stand on Amazon

You can find current device requirements and connection instructions in Sony's DualSense setup guide.

Let your hands settle in

Rest your thumbs on the sticks and your index fingers near the shoulder buttons. Hold the controller securely without squeezing it like it owes you in-game currency. Pause and adjust whenever your hands feel uncomfortable.

In a low-pressure area of your game, practice moving, turning the camera, and using one action button at a time. Looking down at the buttons is allowed. Nobody is grading your first ten minutes.

Make the settings work for you

Open your game's controller settings and start with a camera sensitivity you can comfortably control. Where supported, experiment with button mapping and vibration. Menu names and available options vary by game and device, so use that game's instructions instead of hunting for one universal sensitivity menu.

About those fancy triggers and vibrations

Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback depend on platform and game support. Sony currently notes that PC haptics require USB; haptics are unavailable on Mac and mobile, and adaptive triggers are unavailable on Android. Check its support guide before buying for a particular feature.

If you also own a PS5, Astro's Playroom is a fun introduction to the controller's features. For PC or mobile practice, choose a controller-supported game you already own and enjoy. A new control scheme is enough homework without learning an entirely new world at the same time.

A little practice, a little less button panic

Give yourself a few short sessions. Walk around, adjust the camera, try a simple challenge, and take a break. Eventually your thumbs will find their way without a guided tour.
